Artist Profile
Inspired by a life-long love of fabric and sewing, Karen began to passionately pursue quilt-making in 1997. Karen designed and created custom, commemorative quilts on a commission basis for more than 10 years, allowing her to help families preserve their treasured memories and celebrate the special moments in their lives.

Although she makes a wide variety of quilts, Karen’s true joy comes from creating original art quilts. Karen utilizes a vast array of construction and surface design techniques, often embellishing her quilts with beads, yarns, buttons, ribbons, trims and other small objects that add texture and visual interest.

Teaching workshops featuring her techniques, Karen encourages her students to embellish with abandon and add their own personal touch to each project. When teaching and speaking at quilt shops, quilt guilds and quilt shows, Karen’s lectures and trunk shows inspire quilters to express their creativity and embrace an artful life. Karen’s original art quilts have been exhibited nationally and featured in solo exhibitions.

Over the past several years, Karen has devoted time sharing her knowledge of quilts and quiltmaking with schools. A series of educational visits to the classroom culminates in a class quilt project that creates a lasting memory for both the teacher and the students. Karen is dedicated to educating and encouraging these young artists, designers and quiltmakers of the future.

A Chicago native, Karen now resides in Virginia Beach, VA with her husband, Tad. The artist brings her creations to life in her home studio. Karen’s classes are offered locally at A Different Touch in Chesapeake and Sew E-Z in Virginia Beach, VA
